Pre-Session
As part of this course, you will receive access to three, asynchronous online learning modules which explore the fundamentals of the 4MAT® instructional design model. In addition to providing deep knowledge of the 4MAT model and the needs of all learning styles, these online training courses include a variety of e-learning activity structures you can include in your own instructional design.
Module 1: Your Style
In this course module, you will explore the strengths and needs of each of the four 4MAT® learning styles. You will also discover your 4MAT® learning style. Knowledge of your style preferences and the preferences of other styles will help you communicate and learn more effectively. After the successful completion of this course, you will:
- Value the diversity of learning preferences
- Understand the different needs of the four learning styles
- Recognize the needs of each of the four learning styles
- Adapt strategies to maximize your personal learning strengths and minimize weak areas
Module 2: ESPP-The Four Parts of the 4MAT Learning Cycle
In this course module, you will learn a 4-step model for engaging every learning style in any learning interaction. Understanding how the brain works will help you deliver information in a brain-friendly manner. You can use the 4-step model you will learn in this course when communicating, recommending, coaching and teaching. After the successful completion of this course, you will:
- Appreciate why the four parts of the learning cycle are essential to learning transfer
- Understand what happens in the brain when we learn new information
- Apply a 4-step model to create an engaging learning experience
- Assess what steps are included and missing in an observed learning design
Module 3: Creating a Basic 4MAT Design
In this course module, you will practice building a learning experience using the 4MAT® 4-step model learned in Module 2. By choosing appropriate communication strategies in each step, you will create an engaging learning interaction for all learning styles. You can apply this model to leading huddles, recommending product, admissions enrollment conversations, teaching and more. After the successful completion of this course, you will:
- Appreciate why some communication and teaching approaches work better than others
- Understand how to evaluate the most effective approach in a learning situation
- Apply a 4-step model to create an engaging learning experience
- Assess the effectiveness of activity choice

“4MAT has been the key to creating connection and consistency throughout our education system. Our educators now share a common language for learning design. As a result, the skill and confidence level of both educators and learners has skyrocketed. The concept is brilliant and...makes the 4MAT system simple to understand and apply—a must for all trainers of learning-based companies.” ~VIRGINIA MEYER, Vice President of Education, Aveda Corporation, a division of Estee Lauder
