Instructional Design Course

Hosted by Jeanine O'Neill-Blackwell

4MAT Instructional Design Online Certification

4MAT Train the Trainer Courses are offered in live and web formats. One of our most popular web courses is the 5-part web series, 4MAT Instructional Design Online Certification, based on Hold On, You Lost Me! Use Learning Styles to Create Training that Sticks co-authored by 4MAT® Creator, Bernice McCarthy and Jeanine O’Neill-Blackwell, President/CEO 4MAT 4Business®. All classes are live and recorded.

Here is a quick overview:

  • Discover your learning style strengths with the 4MAT Learning Type Measure
  • Discover your natural training strengths in using right- and left-mode design and delivery strategies using the Hemispheric Mode Indicator®
  • Learn how to engage all learners in every part of the learning process using the 4MAT model
  • Craft four ROI-focused outcomes that guide the design process
  • Apply an 8 step model to build brain-based learning that ensures transfer
  • Learn to conceptualize your content to create a dynamic opening and weave the content together
  • Assess your design using the 4MAT Scaling Criteria
  • Use the 4MATion® Online Training Design Center and Training Design Kit to create and assess your design

All classes are held from 10:30 am - 12:00 Central

Each class will be recorded and available to all registered participants following each workshop.

Session 1: Maximizing Your Natural Training Design Strengths to Reach All Learning Styles
Anyone who has logged time in a training situation, knows that learning differences exist. In this session, you will discover your preferred learning style and how it influences your approach to training design. We will explore the latest brain research on learning styles and discover the four primary learning style needs. More importantly, we will discover a four-part learning cycle that every learner must travel, regardless of style, to truly learn. You’ll identify painful and successful learning strategies for all learning preferences and learn how to stretch your design approach to reach all learners.

Session 2: Increasing Learning Impact Using Right-Brain Learning Strategies
In this session, we’ll quickly tour the latest brain research that gives trainers insight into how to maximize learning impact. You’ll discover your natural preference for right- or left-brain processing using the Hemispheric Mode Indicator®. We’ll explore easy-to-incorporate right-mode strategies you can apply to any content including interactive exercises, visual organizers and assessment structures. When we add right- and left- strategies to the learning cycle, we will discover an 8-step model for teaching any content to any learning style. You’ll see the steps in action using real-world content. You’ll begin building your training design in the online 4MATion® Training Design Center by defining four critical learning outcomes.

Session 3: Applying the 8-Steps to Design to Deliver Training Return-On-Investment
Here we begin designing using real-world content. Using the Quick Design Guide, you will choose activities that work effectively in each of the 8-steps of the 4MAT® design process. We will also dig deeper into the most important step in design, which is where to begin. Using real-world content, we will apply the Umbrella method to define the core concept underlying all the content you are tasked with teaching. The concept becomes the jumping off point in design. You’ll explore the over-arching concept for your design and add this to your design in the online 4MATion® Training Design Center.

Session 4: Creating Dynamic Openings and Gaining Commitment
The two most critical elements of a training design are the beginning and end. In this session, we will explore how to use a powerful “concept” to guide your course development. We will explore how to create engaging openings that draw the learner into the learning process and create a strong learning community. Next, we’ll look at how to “push” content out into the real world using strategies that increase learner commitment and gain needed support from front line managers. You’ll identify how to begin and end your training design using the concept you have defined. Now, you are ready to complete your design. In the 4MATion® Training Design Center, you will add the activities you create or select activity examples from the Bank of Activities to import into your design.

Session 5: Assessing Your Training Design
In this session, you’ll use the Scaling Criteria to evaluate your design. We’ll use the Strategy Assessment Checker in your printed Training Design Kit and the online 4MATion® Training Design Center to enhance your design. We will review the four key learning outcomes and assess against desired learning outcomes.
